CONNECTION BETWEEN EXPRESSIVE ARTS AND HEALTH

I have been researching the benefits of and connection between expressive arts and health and discovered some interesting facts! There is evidence that expressive arts are effective in minimizing adverse mental and biological consequences but the extent of their enhancements are unknown. Evidence has shown that engaging with artistic activities, either observing or participating in it, can enhance one's moods, emotions, and other psychological states as well as have a notable impact on important physiological parameters (Stuckey & Nobel, 2010). 
I've also learned that the World Health Organization (WHO) has a different perspective on health and views it in a more holistic light than I previously believed. WHO's definition of holistic health is: 

"viewing man in his totality within a wide ecological spectrum, and … emphasizing the view that ill health or disease is brought about by an imbalance, or disequilibrium, of man in his total ecological system and not only by the causative agent and pathogenic evolution. (Stuckey & Nobel, 2010) (p13)"  


With this perspective, health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being rather than merely the absence of disease or infirmity (Stuckey & Nobel, 2010). 

God's Ministry for Expressive Arts takes on a more holistic approach that focuses on emotional, social, cognitive, physical, and spiritual health and how we cope with and process our trials with the helping hand of God. Our main goals are to help you learn to positively approach difficult situations and emotions on all levels as well as create space for God to step in and help you heal and grow.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TRIALS, PERSEVERANCE, AND TRUSTING GOD THROUGHOUT IT ALL 

I use expressive painting often as a tool to help me work through those difficult to release emotions such as feelings of betrayal, the feeling I get when I'm lied to, when I make a big mistake, when I accidentally fail others or myself, etc. It's helped me release the darkness inside by allowing me to put it into art thus creating space inside of me for more of God's light to shine through and heal my broken parts. I pray that it will be able to do the same for you 🙏🏾✝️

Here is an excerpt from the first healing assignment from my book, How-To Create Space for God to: Heal You and Strengthen Your Connection with Him Through Expressive Arts, to help you understand the importance of trials, perseverance, and trusting God throughout it all: 

" It was late, around 1 in the morning, and I was up talking with God and reflecting on my life in 2021. That year was particularly rough for me and that's really saying something because I've had a very rough upbringing... I'm an introvert so I hang around a handful of relatives and I have even less people that I consider to be my friend. In 2021, I had a major falling out with my parents, brother, sister, other close relatives, and my main best friend and all within a few consecutive months. I was blatantly disrespected, lied on, publicly humiliated, given horrendously bad advice, betrayed, isolated, under brutal spiritual warfare, and ultimately left for dead; with no one around in the end but a sketchy boyfriend who, despite his shortcomings, prayed for me and with me wholeheartedly. In fact, he reintroduced me to Christ and it was through Christ that I was saved from literal death. 

 I said all that to say this, God helped me realize that I had to go through each soul crushing event. I had to be disrespected. I had to be alone. I had to be lied on. I had to be talked about. I had to learn that most of my loved ones didn't want to see me succeed in life. I had to learn to stand with God, to depend on Him and Him alone because all humans are flawed and will fail me in one way or another. I had to learn that if someone is lying on and talking about other people then chances are they'll do the same to me. I had to learn how to gracefully walk away to maintain my peace. All those experiences lead me to this moment right here, with God and with you. I am the current perfectly imperfect version of myself today because of those trials and looking back I wouldn't change them even if I could.

 Those experiences taught me many things that I am sharing with you throughout this series but the 3 you're focusing on in this assignment are acceptance, trusting God, and perseverance. It's through God that you'll begin to create space for healing and receive help healing your wounds/scars. It's through me that you'll begin to learn to pour your heart out into your artwork thus creating beautifully expressive pieces. This process works for me and I'm confident it'll work for you as well. We must continue to ask God for spiritual growth, wisdom, and strength to grow closer to Him and better understand the messages and signs that He shares with us daily. It's because of said spiritual development that you will be able to begin the process of or continue to understand, accept, and then make peace with your trials so that you can learn the necessary lessons He's teaching you and move on stronger and wiser. As well as live peacefully and joyfully no matter the storms that come your way. I'm praying for spiritual growth, wisdom, and strength for each and every one of you. 

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. James 1:2‭-‬8 NIV 

1. Name 1 thing that is difficult for you to accept about your past. Maybe you lost your job, you had to move when you didn't want to, a loved one passed away, you didn't speak up for someone, a loved one betrayed you, no one ever apologized to you for what they did, you lied on someone, someone lied on you, you owe someone an apology but never gave it...whatever it is just take a moment to observe the chain of events that happened after that difficult moment. What role did it play in shaping you into who you are today? Are the results good, bad, or both? In what ways did our Heavenly Father help you through those trying times?

-Focus on your feelings as you think about that, let them flow freely in your mind and heart. It's okay to feel both good and bad emotions in life, it's normal to allow yourself you feel both of them. Feel emotions as you reflect on this. You're free to pray about it, cry, scream, pace, smile, be still, etc. do and say what you feel comfortable with in association with your emotions 

-Next I want you to select the colors and art tools that match how you feel, don't spend too much time on this part because you can change them as needed; you just need to have a few to begin your artwork 

-Get comfortable and continue to let your emotions flow as you work, visualize your emotions swirling, falling, pouring, dripping etc. from your heart, into your mind, through your hands and finally into each stroke of your art tool. Remember that it's okay to feel. In fact, let it all out. It's okay 

-Continue to verbally and physically express yourself as you continue to let your emotions flow freely through you and into your art. You're not alone, God is with you plus we all have experiences that have hurt us and we're all currently hurting to some degree. Ask God to walk you through and thank Him in advance for answering your prayer and then some. Have faith that He'll give you whatever you ask for so long as it's within His will 

[Transition]
Now that you're done creating your first piece of art, I encourage to take as long as you need to gather yourself and your emotions before you move on. Take slow, deep breaths to settle your breathing and mind. Stretch your body out to relieve any tension that may have built. Take a few moments to meditate on the scripture and the lessons learned from your trials. Pray to our Heavenly Father, get a drink of water, use the bathroom, grab a bite to eat, etc. When you're ready you may begin the next part of this assignment or take a break for today."

SHIFT YOUR FOCUS FROM YOUR PAINS TO GOD'S TRACK RECORD IN YOUR LIFE

Sometimes life is rough and you're just trying to make it through your day, one moment at a time. It's in those moments where we're in shambles and have no choice but to depend heavily on God, trusting Him to carry you through the day like He did on all the other rough days. Glory be to God! He is always present and providing us with everything we need, most times before we even have to ask 🙌🏾   

In our darkest and lowest moments we must remember to shift our focus from our circumstances to our Heavenly Father, from the pain to His promise. This second excerpt from my book, How-To Create Space for God To: Heal You and Strengthen Your Connection with Him Through Expressive Arts, is the following painting activity in the first assignment. This activity helps you to shift your focus from your trials to the Lord's track record in your life, remembering His goodness and mercy in your life so far. I pray this helps you: 

"2. Name 3 difficult things that you've been able to successfully accept about your past. Maybe you finally aced your exam after failing it twice before or maybe you've accepted the fact that people will always fail you in one way or another because they aren't God and that's okay. Maybe you didn't make the cut in your biggest audition but was blessed with a different role later in life that was perfect for you. Whatever it is just take a moment to observe the chain of events that took place as a result. How did you come to accept these difficult moments? What happened to you once you accepted what transpired? Did you have to find refuge with Father God to help you through? In what ways did you notice Him show up for you? Take a moment and observe God's track record in your life. What patterns do you see? 
-Focus on your feelings and let your emotions and visions of what you've successfully accepted flow freely within you. Verbally and physically express yourself with prayer, smiling, laughing, dancing, singing, etc. Take a few moments to let your feelings settle into your heart and mind. Know that you overcame these obstacles and experiences with God's grace and mercy. Therefore, with His continued presence in your life, He will continue to help you accept and heal from all difficult trials. Be glad for the opportunity to strengthen your faith in Him and in yourself. Take note of God's amazing track record in your life! 

-Continue to allow your emotions to flow as you get comfortable and select your art tools and colors. Again, allow your emotions to flow from your heart, into your mind, through your hands and then finally into your art. 
-Feel free to continue to express yourself with words and/or actions and remember that it's okay to feel. Let it all out. You're not alone, God is always with you plus we're celebrating God's glory too! Ask God to walk you through your celebrations and thank Him ahead of time. We must remember that we always need God, not just when life's rough but also when life is going great.

These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:3‭-‬7 NIV"

DISCERNING GOD'S WILL FOR YOUR LIFE 7-DAY BIBLE STUDY PLAN

Discerning God's will for your life can be challenging at times, trust me I know lol. I think it's safe to say that sometimes we just aren't sure what it is that He wants from us and that's okay. It's okay to have questions and want answers, it's okay to admit to God that you're confused and seek directions, it's normal to have doubts about some of His obvious signs that doesn't quite line up with what you prefer. In those moments of weakness, God's power is made perfect and he offers us grace (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we don't understand Him, when we can't see how He'll make good on His promises, when we don't know which step to take next, we have to trust and remember that He works all things out for the good of those who loves Him (Romans 8:28). 

If you have any questions or doubts about what God is up to in your life ask Him in prayer and be watchful of His answers. He'll share with you everything you need to know in that moment and maybe even a little extra 😉! ☕🫖

I received this 7-day Bible study plan from my mentor, just completed it a couple days ago, and am still processing and most importantly APPLYING the wealth of knowledge I've learned from it. 

Charles F. Stanley covers everything from understanding God's character and His will to ways we can discern it and what could be hindering us from hearing God's will in the first place! This is by far one of the most USEFUL Bible study plans I've ever read and I highly recommend it for everyone as it can serve as a learning point and as a reminder.

WILL YOU TRUST GOD TO HELP YOU REBUILD AFTER YOUR STORM?

 Life can be so great and yet so challenging sometimes. As Christians, some people genuinely believe that we're supposed to have these perfect lives where nothing horrible happens and everyone is happy all the time. Well, sorry to break it to you but we have bad days just like everyone else. We struggle to make it through some days just like everyone else. We have mental, physical, and emotional breakdowns just like everyone else. We lose things in storms just like everyone else. However, there is one key difference us Christians have that others may not: we have an infinitely and amazingly supportive, understanding, faithful, dependable, and strong ally in our corner every moment of every day, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 


And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.Romans 8:28 NIV


 You see, when we're weak, so weak that we don't even have the desire to get out of the bed and face the day and rebuild what may have been destroyed (physically, spiritually, mentally, or emotionally), Jesus is right there loving and supporting us. He's right there feeding our minds, bodies, and souls everything we need to not only get out of bed but to also make it through whatever the day holds for us. We can find comfort in just knowing that God didn't just wake us up and abandon us to suffer through the day alone, He gave us Jesus and the Holy Spirit to ensure that we are well prepared for every hurdle, snare, and rickety bridge. 

Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.Psalms 9:10 NIV
To Trust or Not to Trust?


 However, the Holy Trinity may seem distant when we're when we're sitting amongst the debris of our dreams, lives, relationships, etc. after a devastating storm. It may feel like we're left alone to pick up the pieces and joy seems like a vague and distant memory... It's in these moments of sadness and (seeming) defeat when our trust and faith in our Lord Jesus is crucial. Do we depend on the promise of God that He'll give us beauty for ashes or will we give up and wallow in our seeming defeat? Will we allow Jesus to guide us or will we attempt to rebuild on our own? Yes, they may seem like clear cut choices and probably are for some, but for others it may be very difficult to trust God when we can't seem to see or even feel His presence in our situation. We may feel discontent, amongst other emotions, with what He has allowed to happen to us and around us. So I get it but the thing is, whether or not we choose to turn to the Lord determines what will happen next in our lives. 


 When we turn to Christ and trust Him to help and guide us in our rebuilding, we'll feel His comfort and assurance along the way. Things will begin to get better and we'll have faith that it'll last because we're building it on a firm foundation, God, with Christ Jesus as the glue to hold it all together, and with the Holy Spirit flowing freely and fiercely within you to teach you along the way. He'll set us out on the right path and our efforts will not be in vain and He will receive all the glory. 

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.Jeremiah 17:7 NIV 

 When we try to do it on our own or when we give up, we may still feel abandoned and life may still be really challenging. Things may begin to get better and we may be able to rebuild but the foundation wasn't built on Christ and unfortunately it may collapse when another storm hits. Without His guidance our efforts may be misplaced and we may have to have to start over again. 

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.Jeremiah 17:5 NIV 

The Choice is Yours... 


 So what will you decide to do? Will you turn to the Lord and allow Him to refill and recharge you? Will you turn to the Lord and trust Him to rebuild you and/or your situation? It pains me to see people making the wrong choices for themselves so I'll give you the answers but the choice is still yours:  


-You will avidly seek the Lord when you're weak so He can generously give you His strength, comfort, and wisdom. 


-You will turn to the Lord when you're tired and weary of life so He can refill and recharge your mind, body, and soul. 


-You will trust in the Lord our Savior to well...save you. He sacrificed His life to save you once so there's literally nothing that He wouldn't do for you to help you rebuild yourself and/or your situation. 

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 
Ephesians 3:20 NIV

It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. 
Psalms 118:8 NIV 

Just like the Holy Trinity, I just want to see yall win in life so make the right choice and turn to the Lord when you need Him and praise Him ahead of time because He always delivers.

PRAYER FOR PURPOSE

Holy Heavenly Father, 
I come to You humbly in thanksgiving. You have blessed me beyond belief and I truly appreciate all that You've done for me thus far. In honor of Your goodness, grace, and mercy to me I want to make sure I'm living a life that brings glory to Your Name. I understand that You put something special, something unique, inside of me and I want to use those unique qualities to advance Your Kingdom. In the Lord's Prayer it states: "On earth as it is in Heaven" and I want to bring a unique slice of Heaven to earth to bring you honor and glory and for all to enjoy! 


Please reveal to me all the wonderful reasons why You created me and the multitude of ways I can bring honor and glory to Your name. Please open my spiritual senses so I can see and comprehend the information You share with me. I understand and accept that You will tell me as much as I can handle at that moment and agree to follow the steps You choose to reveal to me. Lord Jesus, please guide me with Your light and encourage me with Your loving Presence as I take each step towards fulfilling my purpose. Holy Spirit, please share Your eternal wisdom and strength with me to prepare me for the journey set out ahead of me. Thank you Holy Trinity for everything You will reveal to me and for making sure I have everything I need to accomplish the tasks You've prepared for me.

I love helping people in any way that I can! I'm often found reading my Bible or a Bible study plan, reading Christian fantasy books, and somewhere outside surrounded by nature while I'm working on building my businesses.
